The deal gives Nike responsibility for supplying high-performance competition kits, training wear, hospitality apparel and travel clothing. It also includes podium uniforms and performance-based rewards for athletes who win medals at major events.
Speaking at the launch in Gaborone, BNOC president Tshepo Sitale said Nike will provide world-class, sport-specific kits that meet the demands of each sporting code. Sitale stressed that athletes should not receive generic clothing. He said the uniform must respond to the needs of international competition and give athletes confidence.
“A Team Botswana uniform is more than something an athlete wears. It carries the colours of a country. It carries the sacrifices of coaches, families and communities. It carries the hopes of a nation,” Sitale said.
The agreement includes cash rewards for Olympic medals. Athletes will receive US$30,000 for gold, US$20,000 for silver and US$10,000 for bronze. Similar incentives apply at the Commonwealth Games, with US$20,000 for gold, US$10,000 for silver and US$5,000 for bronze.
Sitale noted that the Nike deal adds to existing support. The Olympic Solidarity scholarship already provides US$600 per month for male athletes and US$750 per month for female athletes.
